Nissan Sunny Overview
Competition in the C-segment is as intense as ever. While most cars in this class were enjoying a small chunk of the large pie, Honda came and simply conquered the complete segment with their path breaking new City. Clearly, the City is the very best in this class and with the Japanese car boasting of as much space as the Sunny, Nissan’s one time best seller has seen a considerable decrease in demand. We have lived with the Nissan Sunny for a long time before and were quite impressed with the car, it’s a vehicle which has acres of space, frugal engines and a good ride quality. Now to bring back the slow selling Sunny in contention, Nissan has given it a facelift, re-positioning the car. Are the changes enough to put the Nissan Sunny back on the sales chart? We head all the way to Port Blair to find out. Check for Nissan Sunny price in Hyderabad .
Nissan Sunny Exteriors & Style
Everything about the Sunny is big. The headlamps were big and are same, just that they are much more curvy and well designed now. Nissan are calling this the new Boomerang headlamps. The grill is entire chrome with chrome strips. And a large Nissan badge in the centre. The bumper is huge and rises all the way above the grill and onto the bonnet. The bumper to houses a grill in the centre with fog lamps on either side and that too has chrome strips. I don’t think I have ever mentioned chrome so many times as here.
Looks like Nissan got a wholesaler. From the side as I have mentioned before the cabin area looks huge. The doors are large with large windows. They took Seagram’s line “Make It Large” a bit too literally. The mirrors now get side indicators. The silver alloys blend well with the chrome yet again on the door handles. The C-pillar appears like that on a notchback and even the boot has a large look to it. The tail lamp flows well from the rear panel to the bumper. And guess what? chrome yet again on the boot lid with the Nissan badge. The rear bumper has a nice fibre lip adding to the classy look. The new Nissan Sunny 2017 does stand out.
Nissan Sunny Interior & Space
The cabin this time around has been upholstered in all-black. The fabric seats and black interior panels look more interesting and luxurious. The brush metal highlights on the dashboard, piano black centre console, leather-wrapped steering, chrome lined dials and silver accents further lifts up the spirit of richness. The choice of materials has been evolved for better and to stay on par with the competition. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather for a more premium look. The audio controls adorned in chrome look pleasing to eyes.
In terms of entertainment, the Sunny gets the same 5.1 inch touchscreen 2-DIN audio unit. The infotainment also offers connectivity features including Bluetooth, USB, Aux-in as well as doubles up display for rear parking camera feeds. Although looking at what contemporaries are offering, exclusion of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is certainly disappointing. However, this time around, the car gets features like intelligent key and push engine start/stop button.
The area where this car shines is the seating and space. The sedan has got shocking amount of space at the rear. The caaaar factor can be evident in the ample amount of legroom, headroom and shoulder room, just behind the Ciaz in its class. There is absolutely no feeling of tightness and in fact, the car is astonishingly airy from inside. The feeling of roominess is also present at the front. The mammoth 490L of boot space is stunning and dumping large suitcases will never be a problem. For more information on Nissan Sunny check Bioinformatica
Nissan Sunny Engine & Gearbox
The petrol makes ample power for the chauffeur driven customer. This is not an engine for the driving enthusiasts. On the flip side the diesel not being much powerful the power and torque kicks in much early, even as low as 2000 rpm. This makes it easy for overtakes and long drives.
Still this car is for rear seated passengers but who can say no to the occasional speed blasts. Thanks to the torque kicking in early you don’t have much gear shifts and as a matter of fact you can do a speed of 40 in 5th gear with knocking. Now that is comfort to the extreme. Even though Nissan have a CVT automatic option, would wouldn’t miss it.
Even with its dimensions, decent performance the Sunny has managed to provide excellent fuel efficiency figures. If we consider 15 km/l on the petrol we still manage to get a distance of 600 km on one 41 litre fuel tank. That is a one stop from Mumbai to Surat and back and that is a lot in today’s times. Diesel promises a range of over 800 km, now that is just mind boggling.
Nissan Sunny Driving Dynamics
The Sunny will continue to be positioned towards back benchers and thus this car isn’t about handling. Still, the vehicle is light on its feet, handles decently well and has decent grip on offer, as long as you don’t push it. The steering isn’t feedback rich but is light and that makes the Nissan Sunny easy to manoeuvre at all times. It does weigh up better than some of the cars in the segment and high speed stability left us nothing to complain about. The NVH levels could have been better though as road noise is apparent inside the cabin at high speeds. Braking performance is good and the ABS has been calibrated well.
Where the Nissan Sunny totally excels is in the ride quality department. It’s a sweet riding car, absorbing most of the bumps in its stride with relative ease. The suspension set-up is on the softer side, yet it feels mature and more than up for the job. The mature calibration of the suspension prevents bounciness over bad roads while also ensuring the car remains stable and tackles bad roads in its stride without much vertical movement. Lots of interior room along with a good ride quality makes the Sunny a very comfortable car for occupants.
Nissan Sunny Braking & Safety
The braking capability of the car is really commendable. The sedan is able to halt much faster than one could expect even from 100 to 0 kmph. And what is better that the car comes to halt in a straight line without any fishtailing. However, there is improvement needed in the brake pedal.Talking about the safety further, Nissan this time around has bestowed the car with driver airbag, ABS with EBD and Brake Assist as standard features. The top end variants gets addition aspects such as front passenger airbag, anti-theft alarm system, front fog lamps and seat belt warning lamp. Other common features include central locking, speed sensing auto-door lock and engine immobilizer.

Nissan Sunny Conclusion
The Nissan Sunny was a hot-seller but new rivals have come and dented sales of what the company likes to call a caaaaaaaaar. Still, the Sunny has a lot of potential as Nissan is very clear and focussed on whom it’s targeting with the car. Nissan is wooing the chauffeur driven and in that regard, the Sunny is still difficult to beat. While other cars in the segment are offering a lot of features, none offer this level of comfort at this price point. With fresher looks and a new positioning, the new Nissan Sunny is sure back into contention.
The facelift to the Nissan Sunny boosts its appeal, it gets a lot of features as well. It’s a good quality car which rides well and offers a lot of comfort to the passengers, that too at an attractive price.
